How do I set myself up to receive pop3 emails?

Summary
This article will provide you with the information you need to send and receive email from your e-mail accounts. This article does not cover the creation of POP3 Mailboxes for information on POP3 mailbox creation refer to How do I set up POP3 mailboxes?
Procedure
In this procedure mycompany.co.uk should be replaced with the domain name you are configuring your e-mail client for.

1. Open Outlook Express.
2. Click on Tools then Accounts.
3. Click on Add then Mail

4. Enter the Display name which you wish to use then click Next.

5. Enter your email address and click Next.

6. Enter the incoming mail server as mail.mycompany.co.uk and outgoing mail server which will be provided by your current ISP.

7. Enter the email address which you are going to retrieve the email from in the Account Name section and the relevant password as set up via the control panel.

Then click Next and Finish.

8. If you are using Telefonica to access the internet the smtp server should be smtp.telefonica.net and use the username and password supplied by telefonica in theServers smtp options tab upon completion of the above step. To get to this screen click your newly set up email account in th accounts screen and then click properties.

Once the correct settings have been entered into your e-mail client, you should be able to receive mail regardless of the domain to which you are currently dialled up, and send mail if you are dialled up to the ISP specified in your 'outgoing mail' account.

How can I send emails using my new addresses?

To Send emails you must ensure that you are using the correct SMTP account settings from your ISP. To obtain these go to your ISP's websites: here are a few examples of the areas where you can obtain the information you need from major spanish Internet providers:

Telefonica activation and account settings:

The Relevant information from all these websites are:

  • Smtp server
  • Account Name, they won't tell you your account name directly but how it should look like based on the information you supplied upon account registration
  • Password, where this is the one you set up initially when subscribing to their service.

    Why don't I suddenly receive any more emails?

    The possibles causes are:

    You have a forwarder configured on your mailbox.
    Your mailbox has exceeded 500 messages or 20 MB.
    An individual mail is over 10 MB in size.

    And the solutions are:

    Refer to How do I set myself up to receive pop3 emails.
    Make sure your mail client isn't leaving mail on the server. Remove unwanted messages from your mailbox.
    Ask the sender of the email to omit any excessivly big attachments.

    What do the root and nobody email addresses stand for?

    The root and postmaster accounts are built in system accounts and must not be deleted!

    The root account stands for the admin contact in charge of the server where your website resides on and the postmaster should be used for the email administrator fo the web server. In both cases a technician at hosting-connect will be administering these accounts for you.
